Ellen’s Storymap – Geography 210: Geographic Dimensions of Human Development

In my few short years, I have traveled to (technically) 7 countries, learned a foreign language, and learned to appreciate new cultures and environments. Since a young age I fell in love with traveling, beginning with the trips my family would make in the summer camping in the woods of New Hampshire and Maine or winters exploring the Florida nature. I have learned that the world has countless possibilities to offer and travel provides a great way to learn more about the world in a very direct and memorable manner. In every place I have been, I have appreciated the location’s culture as a way to shape my own being. I believe that through my travels I have taken something from each place I have been to, from a love of exploring new foods (and of course coffee) to applying the sense of adventure many global citizens feel. I doubt my desire to travel the world will ever slow down, and I wish to apply this goal to understand more about the shift of cultures with the Westernization of the world. Though the places I have been share many similarities, they vary in so many interesting in amazing ways. The places I have chosen for this project exemplify the sense of adventure, often nature-orientated, which I idealize.

Ellen, it was cool to explore the places you have traveled and what you learned from traveling to these places. Growing up in the Boston area with large immigrant populations seems to have exposed you to different ethnicities, cultures, religions, and languages. The migrant communities have introduced new people, cultures, and ideas to Boston through mobility. Additionally, I like your reference to landscape on the slide about Alaska, as it seems to be a unique landscape, and I have not experienced this landscape for myself yet.

Ellen,
I really like that you chose to use your own photos for your different locations, they are amazing. Seeing the different places you have visited are all unique in their own ways but the natural element seems prevalent in most. Its really cool to see that you have experienced so much in your hometown and just on trips with your family, really simple things that have given you so much experience. It is easy to see the passion you have for exploring new landscapes and the appreciation you have for independence, whether it is in open fields or city of Geneva.

Ellen,

The first thing I noticed in your storymap was we used the same title for the slide of home sweet home! Nice narrative done to introduce your trips. The theme is very clear: nature-oriented trips. But I hope you can address this more at the beginning of the introduction! The theme is getting more clear as I go through the slides though. Nice use of photographs and links. I loved the way you address the term landscape. Wish you could do more international side. Good job!

Hey Ellen!

I enjoyed walking through the important places of your life. However, at the end, I felt that there was not a whole lot of conclusory statements or anything to leave the reader thinking.

I really like the relation you showed us fro the locations you visited and how they have impacted you.

Just a small comment, your blog post summary and the first slide of your StoryMap hold the same information. Not the end of the world, but it is repetitive.

You have a link to a video on YouTube on one of your slides. However, there is no reference to it or acknowledgement that it is there. Did you know that you can also embed videos? Try it!

I liked your StoryMap overall, however, there are definitely places there could be more detail in. Good job!
