It still baffles me that only 22 states have federal regulations against shackling women in labor. I remember first seeing a fictional depiction of this in a Grey’s Anatomy episode; albeit this was not real, I remember I was still appalled. This is a pressing human rights issue that needs more recognition and you did an awesome job!

  • Elizabeth–
Good job. Your presentation might be more arresting with the inclusion of a few graphics, photos, or video clips. Sometimes if your topic does not lend itself to multi-media presentations, you need to carefully select the style of your presentation to add interest. I found this website with a recent study on pregnant women in U.S. Prisons: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/news/newsroom/news-releases/first-of-its-kind-statistics-on-pregnant-women-in-us-prisons
This article includes graphs that you could have used in your presentation. It also tells us how many women end up having miscarriages in prison. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) now gives inmates medical care if they need to stay in the hospital for longer than 24 hours. The state or county that provides support for prisons are responsible for paying for delivery and pre- and post-natal care.
