Last night in Thailand
For our final full day in Thailand, we decided to go to both the White Temple and the Black House. These otherworldly attractions were designed by accomplished Thai artists. The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) was designed and continues to be developed by renowned Thai artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat. On the grounds there are many additional buildings adding to the main white temple building.
It was a bit hot out despite the overcast sky.
Despite the extravagant outside, nothing can prepare you for the artwork inside. The artist designed the temple grounds with a strange and interesting mix of Buddhist and Hindu tradition alongside pop culture. Although tourists are not allowed to take photos inside, we spotted images of superheroes, pop stars, movie actors and sci-fi characters intermingled with images of the Buddha, and many Hindu gods and demons.
We had a spider spotting, too.
The gold building in the background is also a gallery for the artist’s work which is powerful and intricately detailed. The White Temple is a great example of how Thailand has successfully embraced the modern world while keeping things distinctly Thai. You’ll never think Thailand is stuck in the past after visiting the White Temple.
Next was the Black House (Baan Dam) designed by national artist Thawan Duchanee who passed away in 2014. This temple and museum grounds focuses more on traditional imagery, including animist and ethnic minority beliefs.
Parts of the complex are interactive, for instance drums and Rocking Horses made from Water Buffalo horns.
