I think that social studies is a topic that children don’t necessarily understand as a whole class. Thinking historically is very difficult to me I can only imagine what it is like for children. Looking at the chart today in class I was surprised to see the level of understanding of children. In most subjects, I find a clear understanding of how to teach it. I still haven’t found it for social studies. Im curious to see what its going to take.

This week I am reflecting on thinking historically. I think this is very interesting because growing up, I never thought about social studies in this way. You really have to take the information and reflect it and use it a way that make sense to you. Once you do that you have to be able to question the information and even put into your own words. I think that the literary circle and the book I am reading is a great way to start thinking historically. I did the bridge builder and I found that I was relating everything to myself and taking the context of the history and applying it to todays life.

Vocabulary;

Growing up I alway dreaded having to do vocab test. They were always timed and half the time they were short answer. I would have to make flash card to memorize the words to put on the test. When it was time for review or benchmarks I would have no idea what was going on.

I remotely remember how the vocab week would go;

What you expect from the class and professors as well as what is expected from you

In this course I expect to learn a whole new way to teach; integrating. This concept was used in the science and math courses because they have many correlations that people don’t always notice right away. For social studies integrating reading and literature is essential when teaching the curriculum. I expect to learn and be come comfortable with making lesson plans revolved around this concept. As far as curricula, I expect to be refreshed of some US history that I haven’t looked at since being in high school. I expect their to many activities we do especially activities we would potentially use in our very own classroom. When it comes to the instructors I expect constructive feedback with lesson plans. I also expect to hear many stories about working in the classrooms. For myself, I expect to stay on top of all the blogs, participate in class and get all work done on time. I expect to ask many questions about lesson plans so that I can get them right. I expect to come to every class prepared and ready to do an activity.  I expect to know the curriculum for Kindergarten social studies.
