Welcome Back!

Hopefully it was a very productive summer for all. As we turn our attention to Fall 2013, it is time for faculty to request Blackboard courses and for students to get back up to speed on how to turn in assignments, contribute to discussion groups, take online assessments, and retrieve content from Blackboard.

Faculty should take a look at this post on how to request your Blackboard course. If you have any questions or concerns, please send an email to blackboard@richmond.edu or call 287-6860.

For students (or anyone needing a refresher), check out the Atomic Learning videos about the tools in Blackboard. You can access Atomic Learning within Blackboard on the “My Blackboard” page or by visiting http://is.richmond.edu/training/tutorials.html.

Atomic Learning Building Block Now Available

If you are not familiar with Atomic Learning, it is the online video training services provider for the University of Richmond.  There are hundreds of applications in their inventory, often spanning multiple versions of the application and for both Windows and Mac users.  Applications include but are not limited to Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Acrobat, InDesign, etc.), Blackboard, iPod Touch, and Windows and Mac OS.  Tutorials are broken up into short (1-4 minute long) video tutorials that you can watch using Flash or QuickTime formats. Users can pause, rewind, or navigate easily between video clips.  You can access the system outside of Blackboard by going to http://is.richmond.edu/training/tutorials.html.

Using Assessments

It is time to give assessments and Blackboard can help! The following information assists you in creating a test and deploying it in Blackboard.

NEW Feature – Improved Pasting from Word

We all do it and we all suffer. You know what I mean, we copy our text, tables and other information from Microsoft Word into Blackboard. The next thing you see is an item that doesn’t display correctly or at all. Now there is a solution: Paste from Word!

The Paste From Word feature provides an easy way to paste text from Microsoft® Word into the text editor without bringing Microsoft specific markup with it. This is added to the text editor. When used to paste text from Word, Microsoft markup is stripped out so the text does not become corrupt and appears as it did in the original Word document. When using the Visual Textbox Editor, you can access through a toolbar. The image below will help you locate this hidden gem!

Blackboard Tip: Customizing your course, part 1

Did you know you could customize several aspects of Blackboard to meet your needs? Start by deleting buttons you don’t use for your course by clicking on the chevron on the button and “delete”. (Make sure to select your course entry point prior to deleting buttons.)  Next, rename buttons to reflect your course. If you prefer a button for “Articles” instead of “Content”, click the chevron on “Content” and then “Rename link”. Finally, organize the buttons that make the most sense for your course by dragging the button into position using the black, 2-way arrow to the left of the button.
