The Big Picture

The college admissions process is very familiar to most teenagers in the United States, and it is something that everyone at The University of Richmond has experienced. However, the process and system needs to be reformed because it has evolved into something that is ethically wrong. From its inception, it has favored students from a high socioeconomic and white background. But, as our country becomes more diverse, we need to have a system that reflects that. Diversity can help all students become better thinkers and more successful people (Stuart Wells). Ethically, we as a country value equality of opportunity; and, if we believe that all people are inherently equal, we should strive for equality. We can fix these unfairnesses by tackling the programs that create them, such as the SAT, and creating ones that will help to fix the disadvantages that already exist. Our system is flawed, but it is not doomed.
