Subculture

Definition: Group(s) of people that are a representation of revolt and a form of refusal from dominant narratives of culture and society that is usually characterized by an object that is symbolic of that refusal and revolt.

Relates to media studies because they are often represented very stereotypically in the media and are not given much representation because they are often a marginalized group of people and do not fit in the dominant narrative.

Example: Bikers/Biker Gangs represented by motorcycles & leather jackets, punk represented by safety pins, and bodybuilders represented by muscles, tan skin, and bathing suits/tight clothes.

Media: Clip from “Wild Hogs” movie below.
