What Now?

Due to the difficulties involved in preventing poaching at source in African countries (arguably as a result of poverty resulting from the lasting legacy of 19th century colonialism) it would be far more effective to try to reduce demand for ivory in those countries where the ivory is sold. Legislation that actively punishes the buyers in order to reduce demand is part of the solution. Arguably educating the population about the situation will have a longer lasting impact. This is a time critical endeavor and fast action is required because poaching has severe impacts on human and elephant populations.
