The film Fitzcarraldo follows one man on his quest to accomplish his dream: to bring opera to the small, isolated village of Iquitos, Peru. Burden of Dreams similarly documents one man’s seemingly impossible goal as it follows the director of Fitzcarraldo, Werner Herzog, over the five-year journey of producing his epic film. The fictional Fitzcarraldo and the documentary Burden of Dreams differ in their genres, but not in the level of determination displayed in their respective protagonists. Both characters overcome hardship and defeat all odds as they commandeer hundreds of indigenous Amazonian people to help them hoist a steam-ship up a mountain in the middle of the Amazon Rainforest.
