Juliana’s Havaianas Consumption Map
In 1962, the company Alpargatas launched a line of flip-flops called Havaianas; the Portuguese word for Hawaiians. Havaianas were inspired by the traditional Japanese zōri sandal, but were adapted to Brazilian society in being produced from rubber, a typical Brazilian crop. Initially, these sandals were worn solely by the lower working class, but after expansion to the higher classes of Brazilian society, Havaianas are worn by everyone in the nation. Havaianas have also become a well established brand globally.
