Stanford’s Vans Consumption Map

Starting up in 1966, The Vans brand has been connecting with youth culture to promote creative self-expression, authenticity and progression for nearly 50 years, while linking the brand’s deep roots in action sports with art, music and street culture. Vans Shoes have made a huge mark in the skating community, the surfing community, and now even the fashion community. Vans was originally founded as The Van Doren Rubber Company in Anaheim, California by brothers Jim and Paul Van Doren. The company was unique in that it manufactured its shoes on the premises and sold them directly to the public. Throughout the 70s the shoe became popular among skateboarders who liked the rugged make-up of the shoe and the sticky sole. By the end of the 70s, Vans had retail stores all over Southern California. In the next 40 years, Vans shoes would be a part of youth cultures all around the world whether it be for skating or casual wear.
