Bananas: A Not So A-PEELING Truth
Bananas are the fourth largest agriculturally grown commodity with over 100 billion bananas sold every year according to World Trade Organization, 2014. With such a lucrative market and capitalism dominating the market standards, banana production has come into ethical and legal question. Chiquita, one of the largest suppliers of bananas growing in Central America, has had a long history of balancing sales figures and ethical production standards of the popular fruit. Many barriers, like globalized price competition and United State’s changing agrochemical limits used in banana production are just a few of the structural barrier of the farming process. Chiquita has had a dark past with ethically producing bananas, although in recent years, they have become more of a “poster-child” producer with their partnerships with Fairtrade and RainforestAlliance to produce sustainable bananas and communities in Central America. In this story, I aim to depict the evolution of the Chiquita brand bananas grown in Guatemala.
