Armaan Imam: How Different Landscapes Have Shaped Me – Geography 210: Geographic Dimensions of Human Development

Travel is not unique. However, what one gains out of it certainly is. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to various places around the world in a process that I believe has shaped my identity. In essence, I feel that it is my global connections that truly represent who I am- as it has shaped my past, present and future. Ironically, travel is the sector that our family business is aligned to as well. Even though most of my adventures abroad have been with my family, this presentation will only consist of the adventures that I took up on my own. These experiences have not only shaped up my passion for travel but also exposed me to different cultures. The plethora of cultural landscapes that I have been exposed to and my interest in business and international affairs is what has allowed me to declare my concentration in ‘International Business’ here at the University of Richmond. One day, I hope to work in international organizations like the United Nations or the WorldBank and apply what I have learned from my interest in travel and business.

I had a similar approach to my StoryMap, being that of different landscapes and places and how they have shaped me as a person. I found it very interesting because I am also an international business student major, and on my previous and current semesters abroad I have noticed this is a trend – for international students to become interested in the field of international business. I also think, similar to my life experiences, that parents and family can have a big impact on the choices we make to travel and explore, which was another theme of this StoryMap. I thought there was good use of the class readings, including ethnoburbs and blocked mobility which was relevant in the given locations.

I loved how personal your StoryMap was and I felt it effectively communicated how you were indeed a global citizen. There was overall a good use of class readings with discussions of different landscapes and blocked mobility. Aesthetically, I thought that using the various nations’ flags as your background was an effective way to highlight the different countries, and evoke a sense of place as a nation’s flag is an important symbol which represents its people and cultures. I wish you would have elaborated a bit more on some of the cultural differences between each place, but overall, a great job.
