The Footprints of My Wildest Childhood Dream

Until today, I have a faith in Nelson Mandela’s statement that says, “Education is the most powerful tool that you can use to change the world”.

My thirst of a better education and future has brought me here. It has changed me and my family. Today, I am here in the US – 12,191 miles away from home – with a very good quality of education.

So far, so good.

This is a story about how I made it to come to the US.

I think you did a excellent job Thalia! You utilized topics we have been learning about throughout the semester smoothly and your narrative flowed very well. Your references to blocked mobility, migration and globalization were particularly impressive. I thoroughly enjoyed your story map. You have lived a very interesting and cool life so far!

Overall, you have a very interesting, engaging, and informative narrative. You accurately use terms from our readings and from class such as “mobility” and the “push and pull factors.” I enjoyed reading about the history of some regions and your comparisons between the countries you lived in; your interactive content enhanced my understanding of your experiences.

You mentioned that you “had” to move and I am curious as to why. I wish you had been more explicit in your descriptions about the culture – what makes the social aspects and economic aspects of each respective country different than the others? Also, defining the word “globalization” would make the ending sentence of your project stronger.

Great narrative! I really loved reading about your story. Your use of class concepts was also excellent; so many of them apply to your life in so many ways, particularly when it comes to your education. It’s crazy to think how much globalization has enhanced our mobility, just from our parents’ generation to ours- look how far you’ve come! Nice choice with your videos and pictures- I particularly liked the graduation video, and I can imagine it would have been very sad to come to the end of such an amazing experience. Awesome job.

This was a lot of fun to follow! I felt like I was traveling with you in the different junctions of your life. You really embody what globalization means for people all over the world, especially when it comes to looking for better opportunities and experiencing things outside of your comfort zone. The amount of exposure you’ve had with the communities and ethnic groups you’ve come across in your travels as well as your migrations has surely given you a lot to reflect upon and continue to do so. I’m also now very intrigued about your perspective on America coming from your origin in Bali and then experiencing a successful socialist country for two years…but I’m sure there will be ways for that topic to come up in discussion over time. Amazing job!
