Til the Cows Come Home: Fair Trade Ingredients in Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream

Fair trade is a system of international trade that focuses on social justice and the connection between consumers and producers of products.  In a fair trade partnership, buyers commit to paying a fair price to the people who create or grow the products so they can use the profit to better their lives and their local community.  Ben and Jerry’s uses five Fairtrade Certified ingredients: sugar, cocoa, vanilla, bananas, and coffee.  In Reading Fair Trade: Political Ecological Imaginary and the Moral Economy of Fair Trade Foods, Michael K. Goodman discusses the benefits of fair trade from an ethical perspective.
