Why International Humanitarian Aid

After I graduate I plan on working in International Humanitarian Aid. I love to travel because I enjoy learning about other people— their histories, customs, languages, cuisine, etc. I have been to a total of 12 countries, both on vacation and service trips. I have always been drawn to Colombia through my father’s stories and I hope to live there one day. While I have always felt a connection with Colombia and enjoyed to travel, I did not realize my interest in service until recently. I went abroad on a service trip for the first time in the 9th grade. Since then I have been on two service trips abroad, both to the Dominican Republic. These experiences abroad as well as volunteering with an ESL class have made me realize that I want to work with the “invisible” populations in Latin America, such as refugees and indigenous people.

Great StoryMap. Cool that you started with your family in order to show the viewer what has motivated you to go to these certain regions as a volunteer. This relates to both mobility and globalisation in a cool way. Due to uneven development some poorer countries now need help from the richer countries and so you have travelled to these countries to help. But without globalisation, in the for of technology you may not have heard about these issues. And without easy transportation by flying your journey would have been much more strenuous.

I think your Storymap is put together with a very cohesive flow. I loved reading about your travels and impact in helping global citizens. It seems your experience in translation has helped other people to help their communication and allow their voices to be heard despite different cultures and language barriers.
