Welcome to Gender, Politics, and Prisons

Dear Students:

Welcome to “Gender, Politics, and Prisons.” This blogsite is our vehicle for creating a learning community engaged with how women and trans or nonbinary people are treated within the prison industrial complex. You will post some assignments here, and share information you find that may be of  interest to the class. While the criminal justice system has a role to play in this area, the course will be centered on prisons. You have an article to read for our first class. My plan is to share the responsibility of exploring this topic with you. What does that mean? It means that you, the student, will speak as much, or more, than I do. We will be learning together about how and why prisons, as well as other institutions, are designed in ways that privilege cisgendered men and reinforces the worst kind of gender stereotypes.

Looking forward to our semester together,

ProfSi (prof-see)
