Heated Discussions In 100-degree Heat

During my three-day stay in Stuttgart, I had the pleasure of meeting many people from various corners of the world. This truly has been a unique experience as I was able to participate in multiple discussions and learn multiple perspectives from my fellow students at U of R, as well as our INEMA counterparts. As the temperature outside continued to go up by leaps and bounds, the classroom became a perfect setting for several heated conversations.

It was interesting to see students trying to overcome cultural and communication barriers as they were trying to carry across their point of view on such important topics as immigration, globalization, and politics. It was also rewarding to see that people were genuinely curious and eager to learn and understand other cultures. Even though some comments appeared as categorical and strongly-opinionated, at the end of the day I realized that we were all trying to expand our horizons and open ourselves to new experiences.

As an HR professional I realized the importance of bringing people together to spark conversations and encourage positive interactions. Even though some of the activities done in class did not appear to have a direct relationship between the explored subject and the field of HR, I can see many practical applications to such important HR issues as engagement, retention, and career development.

I also liked the fact that my opinions were challenged as this is the only way to grow personally and professionally. During our visit to Daimler, the Senior Manager of HR Digital Transformations Dirk Nees said that “sometimes the best way to develop and to grow is to get outside of your comfort zone.” I find this to be very true when it comes to professional growth and development. Working with individuals from different backgrounds, learning from each other and challenging each other is the only way to become a better professional and a better person!
