I had never thought that discrimination could actually harm the person who is practicing it. People think too much about what they gain from discriminating against another group (money, nice houses) that they never consider what they lose (diversity, unity, learning about other people). I also appreciated Figure 2, as it appropriately outlined the cycle of The System and how difficult it is for anyone to change their status. This dispels the myth that poor people are lazy or don’t work as hard as wealthy people.

I thought it was interesting how nothing in the center of the map was hazardous or declining. The blue and green regions mainly existed farther from the city center whereas the red and yellow regions existed near the middle. Since the author of the article notes, “not only does this collapse of intergenerational wealth creation impact the lives of families throughout the Richmond region, it detrimentally impacts the long term economic viability of the region,” it makes me wonder if the yellow areas can be fixed and how long they have before they turn red. Building off of this idea, from the map I saw that the University of Richmond was in the blue region (I think). However, I wonder if the city center can become so impoverished that other areas begin to decline even though they had a better start with more opportunities available? In a way, the redlining and creation of what white people thought was a “utopia” could end up being the thing that hurts them in the end.

The popularity of idea that the poor is poor because of themselves ties the ongoing socioeconomic division to the capitalist system in the US. It is interesting to see how people can close their eyes to facts and just point fingers to each other. Besides, on paper, public housing system sounded such a cool idea to help poor to not worry about the house issues. My parents live in a housing community in Turkey, so that we can afford basic needs and education without worrying about rent or mortgage. However, after I see the system of public housing in the US, I realized it only “creates a concentrated poverty” as the reading suggests. It is a policy to benefit rich to stay away from the poor instead of the motivation with helping poor. Thus, it misses the fundamental nature. I was also wondering when is the last time they updated the website. I could not find any date.

The DSL project is very interesting to me. I looked at a few cities, and found that in most cases, the hazardous zone tend to be grouped together, even if it is not in the center. Furthermore, the higher the percentage of African Americans is in the population, the higher percentage of hazardous zone the city will have. Also, the smaller the region is, the more likely it will have a larger hazardous zone. I think it is because of the density of the population. I would love to see more data analysis once the data set is complete.

What really struck me from the reading was the bar graph on the first page. Within Richmond, about half of the population is in poverty yet they occupy only a tiny fragment of the space in… that already goes to show how disadvantaged and how the resources are very disproportionate due to their housing and lack of access to space. I looked at the redlining maps within my home, Ewing, New Jersey, it was sad to say the outlines that existed still hold true today. The areas in green are occupied by the well-off people, who have the best schools, cleanest neighborhoods etc. The red areas, have the worst rep, poor school systems, and are occupied by lower middle class, or low-income families. After the time that has past minimal change has happened.

Reading “Where you Live,” I was shocked at the effects of redlining and how the city only encouraged cycles of poverty. For instance, I never thought about how a transportation network can prevent certain neighborhoods from getting jobs. I was also surprised, albeit pleasantly, at the steps that the city of Richmond was taking to better reintegrate the city.

As I was reading the HOME research, I was surprised by the statement that, “while 60% of European citizens believe that the poor are trapped in poverty by reasons beyond their control, only 29% of Americans share this view. Conversely, 60% of Americans believe the poor are lazy, as compared to 26% of European citizens.” This made me think of the concept of the American Dream that so many people still heavily believe in. They make it seem as though we are given equal opportunities for success, but in reality, not only is it hard to climb up the socio economic classes, but there is a correlation between those opportunities and race. One still can observe that the red zones from the past are the same as the current red zones in the sense that the groups of minorities continue to remain in the red zone.
