Intrascholastic Competitions

TAB Intrascholastic Competition

This competition is held annually during the fall semester, and is open to all law students at the University of Richmond. It is designed to test the students’ command of evidence and oral advocacy skills, and is an excellent opportunity for students to earn an invitation to join the Trial Advocacy Board. Participants compete in teams of two and have to prepare both sides of a case; there is no writing component to this competition. Students compete in up to six rounds of competition to determine a champion. The top four teams are given automatic invites to the board, and the board reserves the right to extend discretionary invitiations to other strong advocates as well. The Trial Advocacy Board hosts training sessions on basic trial practice prior to the competitions to prepare new advocates.

VTLA Competition

VTLA is a two-round trial advocacy competition sponsored strictly for University of Richmond law students by the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. The competition is held early in the spring semester, and is open to first, second, and third year students. The first round is a head to head competition between two teams, and the remaining teams compete in the second round to determine who will represent the school in the regional competition. After the first round, the top eight competitors are selected to compose the two regional teams for the American Association of Justice Competition.
