American Association of Justice Regional Trial Advocacy Tournament
AAJ seeks to inspire excellence in trial advocacy through training and education for both law students and practicing attorneys. The association accomplishes this goal in part by sponsoring the National Student Trial Advocacy Competition, an annual nationwide mock trial competition. The competition is an exceptional opportunity for law students to develop and practice their trial advocacy skills before distinguished members of the bar and bench. AAJ’s mock trial cases are always civil cases and tend to deal with products liability, personal injury, or medical malpractice/negligence issues. Teams will be judged on their skills in case preparation, opening statements, use of facts, the examination of lay and expert witnesses, and closing arguments.

John L. Costello National Criminal Trial Advocacy Competition
The UR Trial Advocacy Board is excited to be attending the 2012 Costello Competition.
The Costello Competition is uniquely designed by Judge Jonathan Thacher to take participants outside the typical realms of law school competitions. By revealing unknown facts and witnesses as the competition progresses, the Costello competition simulates the evolving and unexpected nature of real-life criminal trials. This dynamic design provides competitors with a realistic experience as counsel in a criminal trial and an exciting take on trial advocacy.
This year’s Costello Competition will take place on February 2-5, 2012. Each competition trial will be in a courtroom at the Fairfax County Courthouse in front of three judges. All competition judges will be local judges and practitioners, and a sitting judge will preside over each trial.
Each competing team is composed of 3 members (2 advocates and 1 witness) and will be assigned to one side of the criminal case for the duration of the competition. As a result, counsel will only need to prepare one side of the case (defense or prosecution) and will have the benefit of a prepared witness as in most criminal trials. How competing teams decide to divide the labor within their actual teams and between rounds is at their discretion. It is both permissible for a team member to act as a witness in one round and then an advocate in another, or for team members to maintain the same roles throughout the competition. The competition problem and team assignments will be released to all officially registered competitors starting in mid-December. The competition will use the Federal Rules of Evidence as well as the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure.
