Conclusion

Starting with artists like Pat Benatar, the shift in attitude from oppressing women to uplifting them helped pave the way for other more feminist artists like Cyndi Lauper and Madonna, and even has influence today with artists such as Angèle. The video for her song “Balance Ton Quoi” has similar themes of playing with gender norms and the balance of patriarchal control. This shift in power shows how women of today are reaping the benefits of the work put in by artists like Benatar, and furthering that work but in a modern environment like now focusing on using social media and intersectionality. This puts the focus on music and message instead of image. Pat Benatar’s “Sex as a weapon” was a powerful statement against the oversexualization of women used in capitalism for advertising products, one such being music videos, and plays on third wave feminism that worked to break down stereotypical gender norms. Angèle and other present-day feminist artists continue to expand this work, now guided by fourth wave feminism and the present-day musical environment.
