Background of Debauchery

The hard partying lifestyle of rock stars in the 70s was far from a secret, and Joe Walsh accurately captures the behavior and antics that the bands of these times were known for in his hit song. The phrase “It’s hard to leave when you can’t find the door” can be interpreted as a metaphor about how hard it is to escape the cycle of drugs, women, and fame that devour these stars(2). However, in Walsh’s case, he actually went to a party and after a long night walked into a closet in his attempt to leave the house. This is the perfect example of the hard partying lifestyle Joe Walsh lived. Later on in his life, Walsh admitted to battling substance abuse problems like many artists in his genre, and even though he said he would go back and change some things, he has no regrets(3).
