F Tha Police

As N.W.A rose in the pop culture world, their songs became bigger influences. One song, in particular, is “F**k Tha Police”. “F**k Tha Police” was a hit song on their popular album, “Straight Outta Compton”. The purpose of this song was a fight for justice under an injustice criminal system. As far as the musical aspect, “F**k Tha Police” had an upbeat and easily recognizable instrumental, beginning with the “scratching” of a record. The first voice you hear is Dr. Dre. It sounds like he is a judge, as he directs the court. “Right about now, N.W.A court is in full effect, Judge Dre presiding in the case of N.W.A vs. the Police Department.” The song is portrayed in a courtroom as an analogy to the criminal justice system toward minorities. While D. Dre is the judge, you have defendants (group members) such as Ice Cube, Eazy-E, and MC Ren. For each defendant, they tell their stories as a young black male living in the streets of Compton. As the song continues, Ice Cube starts to rap. “F*ck tha Police comin’ straight from the underground, a young n*gga got it bad ’cause I’m brown.” “And not the other color so police think, they have the authority to kill a minority.” This verse spoke throughout the black community of Compton, as well as the rest of the United States. The next “defendant” who was called up to the stand was MC Ren who gave his testimony; then Eazy-E.

This song, in general, was a staple for the fight for equality in America. Yes, “Straight Outta Compton” was a great song from the late 80s, but “F**k Tha Police” was a song we believed changed the definition of “gangsta rap”.
