What advice did you get that was particularly helpful in your job search? What worked and what did not work?
Networking played a huge role in my job search. Richmond is a city where connections are everything–especially in the legal community. I attended networking events through the CDO, various student-led organizations, and the Richmond Bar Association throughout my 1L year. The opportunity to meet and learn from practicing attorneys gave me in-depth insight into a wide array of legal fields and allowed me to connect with members of the community on a personal level. When I entered my summer position, I already knew a great number of practicing attorneys from my networking efforts throughout the year.
What advice or information would you like to share with other students?
Serving as a judicial intern to Judge Lauck was the best 1L summer opportunity! It gave me a broad survey of different areas of law and helped me hone my interests while enhancing my research and writing skills. I would highly recommend seeking out a judicial internship as a 1L summer opportunity, especially since the school and our alumni generously provide stipends for this type of unpaid experience.
Which CDO resources or CDO events were particularly helpful during your job search? How did they help?
The CDO provided numerous resources to help me attain my summer employment. I became interested in becoming a judicial intern after attending some of the early Fall events where the CDO explained what types of opportunities are typically available for students during their 1L summer and the availability of a summer stipend for unpaid positions. When it came time to get my applications ready, my CDO advisor took great care to review all my materials and provide feedback for revisions. One of the most helpful resources the CDO provided was the contact information for former law clerks that worked with my judge. Contacting these individuals helped me prepare for interviews and learn more about what the day-to-day would be like as a judicial intern.
