Abstract:

I read Playing but Losing: Women’s sports after Title IX. It first began by speaking on the positive of Title IX in that many women and females across the country were immediately afforded so many athletic opportunities across the country at the high school and collegiate level. The idea of the legislation in the first place was to eliminate any sexual or gender discrimination regarding women in the opportunities that they were afforded. Additionally, they then move in to media and how women are discriminated against when it comes to media coverage. Women are still covered up to 90% less than men and it is not equal at all. On top of that, the article then moves in to how women are discriminated against in positions of leadership. When Title IX was first written up, part of its intention was so that women could be accepted and promoted within leadership positions in college sports, however that has not been the case. In 1972, 90% of coaches in female sports were women whereas in 2011, only 40% of coaches of the same sports were women. 5 of 120 of the Athletic Directors in the top 120 athletic institutions are women and looking at it more largely across all levels and divisions of female sports, they still only make up 19% of the Athletic Directors. in total, women still only make up 15-25% of the female workforce in the sports world when you look at coaches, positions of administration and writing/editing. On another note, the article went in to detail about how women are oppressed in these professional leadership roles and why they are not encouraged to pursue these positions. Work-life balance is much easier to maintain at lower levels of leadership. Wage deficits, sexual harassment and difficulty of promotion are just a few reasons that women are oppressed. On the final note, homosexuality and heterosexism are primary factors that drive these old and archaic traditions because of a traditionally male-dominated industry.
