White Representation in the Media

This quote from, “The Last Shall be First: Aesthetics and Politics in Black Film and Media” discussing the physical alteration of the appearance of white actors using different lighting and shooting styles. This is done to create an aesthetic of “whiteness” that is more visually pleasing, and “beautiful” to viewers. The idea of humanizing this overly beautified image comes from the over representation of white people in the media; which forces all viewers to normalize the beautified image.

The television show, “Friends” has been incredibly popular for decades, and it is certainly one of my favorite shows. The program is also an example of over representation of white people in the media. Additionally, exemplified by this image, it is also an example of the white aesthetic that this reading referred to.
