Culture (Hip-Hop)

“Refracted through centuries of usage, the word has acquired a number of quite different, often contradictory, meanings.”

When people usually think of the word culture, most would not associate a modern rap group with the term. Migos, a popular three-headed monster, consisting of Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff have decided to use the term “culture” as their slogan. “The new alb um title is about the culture of hip-hop music,” Offset said. “It’s time to let the culture be known. It’s time to claim it. And it’s time to claim that we are the Migos, and for people to understand that this is what we did. We did a lot for music. Migos is the culture. Seriously. There are artists that are way bigger than us that get recognition off our flow” (hotnewhiphop.com).

The reason why I chose to write on Migos is simply because it is different. Most people associate culture with race or a lifestyle, but Migos has associated culture with rap music. They claim that they rap for the culture and every day they change the culture of hip-hop. This fits perfectly with the quote above, as Migos has altered the meaning of culture and their followers have embraced the new meaning that the group has put behind the word. They have titled their first two award winning albums “Culture 1” and “Culture 2.”
