Sound and Screen: Introduction

We have made it our mission to analyze the role of sound and soundtracks in video game design. This site examines processes through which a sound designer composes a work for a video game; to this end, we have included relevant excerpts of interviews with professional sound designers and industry insiders. We have divided this portion of the overarching examination into discussions of artistry and business within the industry of sound design.

This website analyzes the compositional qualities and commercial successes of video game soundtracks. We have considered a select number of video games and their corresponding soundtracks in the formation of our webpage; we have narrowed our examination to analyses of Elden Ring and Doom. Discussions pertaining to these soundtracks include examinations of instrumentation, vocals, conventional genres, and rhythmic intensities. Our study serves two purposes. First, the study examines artistry in video game sound design and highlights the processes undertaken by professional composers. In doing so, we are able to identify correlations between game soundtracks and the popular success of games. Second, this examination intends to identify an optimal and imitable equation of instrumentation, rhythm, and harmony that best enhances a gameplay.
