Similar to many businesses, Spotify operates in this role of being a “necessary evil.” As we have discovered throughout our research, there are many issues with the platforms business practices and legal ambiguities. While this is not the perfect situation for either artists or the industry, it is the best type of business that we have developed so far. We’ve seen Spotify attempt to remedy, or maybe cover up, these wrongdoings with their resources offered to developing artists. As the business continues to try to survive and thrive, it must have an operating model that makes a profit so it is able to reinvest in its services. However, in its pursuit of this goal, there is the question of whether or not Spotify will be “a platform that simply allows creators to spread content, or whether it [will be] a media company, which has legal liability” (Lipman, 2022). Perhaps we will see more accountability coming from artists, or maybe more government regulations will be put in place to help artists claim the compensation they deserve.
