“Sexuality of Instrument” in Ancient China

10 Mar

After my research for the informal talk, I found there is a lot to be discussed on this topic, so I want to keep exploring it in the final project. I think it is really interesting that a specific type of instrument or music can be associated with a single gender. I will explore the reason behind it and examine the process that forms the idea. I think it will connect with some specific ideas that we discussed in class, such as hierarchy of forms of music. We talked about some music was deemed as “a lower art” because people dance with it, instead of listen to it quietly. I will elaborate on whether a certain forms of music was deemed as “a lower art” because women performs it, and the music itself was considered as feminine.

  1. Great choice of topic — and I think you’ll find much more to connect with when we finally reach the unit on gender, and specifically on the nineteenth-century piano.
