Females Seeking Freedom in a Sexist Society

In the sexuality section of this course, a core idea we discussed regarding the opera, Carmen, was whether Carmen was actually ever able to obtain the freedom she wanted. She constantly voices her freedom throughout the show and breaks away from expectations of women at the time by openly expressing her sexuality. However, the male characters and the society she lived in ultimately used her free nature and open expression of sexuality to cage her. In my blog post, I want explore this idea of finding freedom in one’s sexuality versus the consequences that unfortunately can stem from it due to society through analyzing several female performers’ attempt to express their freedom. Artists I will most likely focus on are Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus.
