The Creation of The Album “Homework”

The production of Homework is the perfect example of the culture shift that the at-home availability of production tools caused.  The instrumentation that is heard on the tracks within Homework is incredibly vast, and extremely impressive given the small variety of tools that were used in production.  The album “appears and breaks the mold: with an audience devoted to dance, its proposal is to review and shred sounds that come from further back in time and land in electronic culture, using its newest sonic aspects” (Nexis Uni).  Daft punk uses synthesizers to create a multitude of different sounds, which return “to funk, disco, hip-hop, electro and other” genres (Nexis Uni).  The ability for an artist to create music with such a variety in their sounds is incredible, and is due to the use of technology like synthesizers and DAWs.  Thomas Bangalter, one of the members of Daft Punk, attests to this in an interview, “you can do some really lo-fi stuff with two drum machines and an old synth and put it out on a major label” (Petridis). Furthermore, Homework went on to be an incredibly successful album, selling “1.4m worldwide to date, including 300,000 in France, 180,000 in the UK and 300,000 in the US (Music Business International).  Specifically, two of the songs “Da Funk” and “Around The World” were breakout hits.
