Introduction: Auto-Tune and T-Pain

The 1998 creation of auto-tune transformed singers’ voices into “studio creations” and enhanced the importance of music in the market by changing performers voices into their most appealing form while creating a popular yet enjoyable sound. The impact of auto-tune includes developing the melody and timbre of singers by using technology which has allowed artists such as T-Pain to achieve such musical success. The notable progression and change of auto-tune over the years has helped T-Pain create highly favored entertainment such as his popular hit “Buy U A Drank”. T-Pain’s use of auto-tune in his 2007 release of “Buy U A Drank” transformed the sound of traditional hip hop melodies along with adding melodic hooks to an increasingly popular club culture. While many listeners assume that auto-tune is used to mend vocal imperfections, this is not always the case. Artists like T-Pain used it for creative purposes. These creative purposes include a wider range, change in timbre, and smoother hooks. Auto-tune technology, therefore, added a robotic and electric spin to the otherwise traditional rap song.
