Genres from the 808 and “Planet Rock”

With the use of the 808 in “Planet Rock” the technology gained massive popularity worldwide. This sparked a massive creative burst where the 808’s iconic sounds allowed the technology to be played with to create new rhymic patterns that would develop into the creation of many new genres. Bambaataa himself in 1993 remarked that his “electro-funk gave birth to freestyle rap, the Miami bass sound, and House Music (Perkins 13). David Guetta, Pharrell and more also remarked how the 808 was the turning point or a realization moment that electric music created from the 808 was groundbreaking (Baker et al.) This can be seen from the multitude of genres created by the use of inorganic timbres and synthesized beats. Some of the genres created by the 808 are G-funk, Freestyle Hip-hop, Electro, Acid House, Trap, Miami bass, Techno and more.
