Each year the Muse Law Library at the University of Richmond School of Law celebrates Constitution Day on September 17. This year we were delighted to bring you two guest speakers: Ana Edwards, Education Program Manager of the American Civil War Museum, and Eden Heilman, Legal Director of the ACLU-VA.

Ms. Heilman examined some of the most troubling cases in recent memory regarding banning and challenging books in the United States, several of which occurred right here in Virginia. In fact, book banning has been on the rise overall, and it is no coincidence that the majority of challenges are to authors in the LGBTQI+ community and/or authors of color. As an ACLU lawyer, Ms. Heilman is dedicated to preserving the constitutional protections of freedom of speech. She also talks about the steps law students and new attorneys can take to fight back against censorship.

This presentation was offered in partnership with SAGA (Sexuality and Gender Alliance).
