Hackers vs. ISIS

Anonymous is a collective international group of hackers. The group, which originated in 2003, became known for numerous cyber attacks on government, religious, and corporate websites whose interests conflict with the spread of free information. The Anonymous members disguise themselves in public by wearing Guy Fawkes masks.

Now they have shifted the target of their cyber attacks to ISIS. Following the terrorist attacks on Paris, the Anonymous hackers declared war on the Islamic State on November 15th, 2015. They are launched what they consider their “biggest operation ever” to hunt and shut down ISIS related social media accounts and websites under the name of “#OpParis” (Operation Paris). Anonymous posted a video on YouTube in French warning ISIS to, “expect massive cyber attacks. War is declared. Get prepared. Anonymous from all over the world will hunt you down”.

In the 24-hours following the release of this video, Anonymous took down 5,500 ISIS-related Twitter accounts. The final count in #OpParis was approximately 46,000 Twitter accounts. This proves just how wide spread Anonymous collective’s hackers, data miners, and spies are.

The group is still actively researching, identifying, and monitoring all of the Islamic States’ online activities. The hacking collective is using social media channels to disable ISIS’s recruitment sites and communication accounts. These cyber attacks serve as a crucial step in combating the ISIS threat.
