In-Class Writing Guidelines
In-class writing assignments (informal and exploratory writing)
Occasionally, an in-class writing activity will be assigned in class.
What is the purpose of these writings? The purpose of these in-class writing activities is to allow you to explore unstructured and informal writing. These assignments will not be explicitly graded, other than to note whether or not you completed the exercise. These will most often be in response to reading and will be used for the subsequent class discussion.
Why do we do this kind of writing? This kind of informal and exploratory writing is not an exercise just for students. Professionals in many careers write to explore their own ideas. Informal writing allows one to confront their own confusion about a topic—confusion that can subsequently be explored through further writing, revision of writing, and/or discussion.
How will you be evaluated? Generally, these assignments will be evaluated as check (completed) or no check (not completed). There is no make up for missing in-class writing.
