Some information on SAT scores and first-year GPA

Submitted by Lillie Mucha:  The study was focused on the relationship between the scores and first-year GPA, but I found an interesting table of information on page 5 which shows the average scores collected from the participating colleges. Unfortunately, the data set of participating colleges underrepresents lower-selectivity schools, but the proportions are fairly similar nonetheless (36% of colleges in the population vs. 23% of colleges in the sample).

The research done on enrolled college students is here: http://research.collegeboard.org/sites/default/files/publications/2012/7/researchreport-2008-5-validity-sat-predicting-first-year-college-grade-point-average.pdf
The data which provided all SAT test-taker information is here: https://secure-media.collegeboard.org/digitalServices/pdf/sat/sat-percentile-ranks-crit-reading-math-writing-2014.pdf

The mean SAT scores from enrolled college students in the format CR/M/W were:
560/579/554
The mean SAT scores from all SAT test takers in the same format were:
497/513/487

From Lillie:  That’s a very large difference between the two. I’m not sure what really makes the difference. I’m sure a lot of it has to do with who was admitted to college and who wasn’t. It could also have to do with who decided not to apply to college.
