Developing My Role as a Leader

In March, I became a Team lead. I had to account for twelve other individuals. I became the On the Job Trainer for any new person that joined the team. I had no idea what I had accepted. My work time, became dedicated to helping others and less about maintaining my own work. I was use to staying to myself majority of time and only accounting for my own work. So I was tasked with finding balance in my position.

As I progress more into the position, there are some challenges that I face. Issues such as non effective management collaboration, cultural differences, communication barriers, and the list goes on. How can I be an effective leader and make my people be successful? After all, their work is now a reflection of my leadership.

My organization requires all leaders to complete Effective Leadership Development Training. It’s a mixture of online classes, sit in classes, and professional development activities. I was partnered with a coach from an outside consulting firm whom will have three over the phone coaching sessions. In preparation for the first session I was given articles to read and two videos to watch from the Chambers Bay Institute website. I have pasted the links below. I have found them useful to where I am at in life, and decided to share in case they can be of use to someone else.

My first session was this week and my coach wanted to know what my biggest challenges, strengths, weaknesses, and goals. The hardest one for me to answer was my strengths. What I thought my strengths use to be don’t seem to be them now. My vision is cloudy; because I feel that I am unable to be successful at being a leader, because my leader is not providing a good example for me.

  1. David Robinson – Leadership – Bring out the best in those you lead    “…To be an effective leader you have to care about the people you are leading… you have to want to see them do their best. That is what motivates people to follow you….it helps them to aspire to be the best they can be. Effective leaders bring out the best in those that they lead…” David Robinson

  1. Lou Holtz – Leaders have a responsibility to make those they lead successful   “… If you are in a leadership role, your responsibility is to make people the very best that they can possibly be. Not everyone can be all-American, not everyone can be first team, but everyone can be the very best they are capable of being….you have obligations and responsibilities…you do not have the right to let others fail because you don’t fulfill your obligations…You don’t have the right to cause other people to fail.” Lou Holtz
