Balance and Self-Care

When we talk about Caring Leadership, whether in an office or school setting, we are most often referring to the way in which a leader (boss, teacher, principal) cares about their colleagues or students.  We might also be referring to how all the employees or students treat one another.  What we often forget to consider is that every leader needs to practice self-care.

That self-care can take many forms.  It might mean taking time each day to go for a run, attend a yoga class, or meet friends for a drink.  It might mean taking an hour to meditate or the time to get lost in a book.  It might mean just sitting and watching a beautiful sunset.  Whatever form self-care takes, it must be a chance for the leader to re-charge their battery.  When self-care doesn’t come naturally we have to be more mindful of it.

After all, if the leader of an organization is not taking care of themselves, they will not be able to take care of others.

It could even be taking a week off to learn new things in a small town in Germany!
