Lost Your Marbles

As we considered our values today, some of our conversation afterwards steered in a direction of our job obligations and life circumstances dictating what our values were. For example, needing money equating to working hard and rather than understanding what we feel and desire being our values.

I believe if our desires matched our jobs and responsibilities our positions wouldn’t seem as much like a chore. I wondered what the world would look life if people were to pursue their desires/values in this way. It also made me stop and consider what I really valued and what my life looks like in my employment and education.

Are there enough marbles to go around?

In trying to apply this to the workplace I thought this value method could be applied by helping to define role responsibility. For example, for different positions allowing coworkers to place marbles in jars aligned with different responsibilities that they believe people do on a day to day basis. Afterwards discussing what the responsibilities actually are and helping others to see how their jobs crossover and how you could work together.

Currently, in my position role definition is key as others often aren’t aware of how the team functions and what each other does. I think this could be a great exercise to be applied.

In the meantime, this could also be applied to determine what’s most important to our coworkers in the workplace which could build understanding as to why people function the way that they do in the workplace. We could find out what they value most about their jobs, and discussed why. This could create an engaging environment and build collaboration within the team and help the team to value others values as we learn more about one another.

Wow Jonathan, that video was powerful. I completely get where the message is coming from. I work a full-time job, two part-time jobs, school and I have a child. People always ask me how I do it. I don’t have an answer, other than you do what you have to do no matter what. I have person that’s watching my every move and is expecting me to pull it through for our family. That was n excellent way of putting the activity today into perspective of your work environment.
