I enjoyed the Harvey reading because it explains and asserts why leadership is fundamental. I especially was interested in how he presented the theories that supports leadership. In the leadership cycle, I was most absorbed by the question: “Where are we going?” When examining leadership it is important to understand this question. It is important to be conscious in figuring out the steps needed to achieve your goals because then it is just going to be blanketed statements with no actions on how to bring about change. I think that this is the first and crucial step that is necessary in becoming an effective leader.
I agree this is an important question because part of leadership is leading a group towards a common goal, or solution as the reading mentioned.
I also really liked these questions that Harvey presents. I think that they really can help orient a leader to figure out (1) where they are currently and (2) how to grow and move from that current point. These questions are great to ask really analyze one’s actions and also future progress.
The Group comes first mentality can be a dangerous one. Group Think is one of the leading factors to death in fraternity houses. This sense of anonymity withing in a large mas of people is how careless and deadly things can occur.
I do think we can sometimes lose sight of the future, and what change can be done, when we uncover all the inequalities and injustices present in our leadership. While this knowledge is essential, it is critical that we also also seek to better our future.
Your point about the need to be conscious that a goal is not possible or attainable without knowing the steps necessary to get there. A good leader should be considering actions that need to be taken and relaying that to their followers.
