“Creative Nonfiction,” “literary journalism,” “literary nonfiction,” or just, “the fourth genre” is a developing field. In this course students will read and analyze a variety of “creative nonfiction”: personal essays, memoir, biography and autobiography, science writing, and the like. We will also explore some of the ways in which digital media are being used in creative nonfiction writing; students will produce short digital stories in addition to their paper portfolio. Using the reading as prompts, models, or jumping-off points, students will produce short pieces of writing weekly to be shared in a workshop setting. The course will involve intensive reading and writing, and extensive feedback, with the goal of developing a portfolio of polished work by the end of the semester.
