{"id":814,"date":"2019-05-02T10:22:49","date_gmt":"2019-05-02T14:22:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/?p=814"},"modified":"2019-05-02T10:49:59","modified_gmt":"2019-05-02T14:49:59","slug":"metaphor-of-the-month-mayday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/2019\/05\/02\/metaphor-of-the-month-mayday\/","title":{"rendered":"Metaphor of the Month: Mayday!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-815\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/files\/2019\/05\/mayday.png\" alt=\"SOS Text\" width=\"1280\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This internationally recognized call for help has long been common parlance, but until today, when I checked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oed.com\/view\/Entry\/115299?rskey=V2I4CU&amp;result=2#eid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the OED listing<\/a>, I had no idea of its origin.<\/p>\n<p>A 1923 usage listed gives us all we need to know: &#8220;Owing to the difficulty of distinguishing the letter \u2018S\u2019 by telephone, the international distress signal \u2018S.O.S.\u2019\u00a0 will give place to the words \u2018<span class=\"quotationKeyword\">May-day<\/span>\u2019, the phonetic equivalent of \u2018M&#8217;aidez\u2019, the French for \u2018Help me\u2019.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fascinating and perhaps our briefest post yet.
