{"id":6,"date":"2008-09-24T20:11:10","date_gmt":"2008-09-25T00:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/2008\/09\/24\/useful-resources-for-teaching-essays\/"},"modified":"2008-09-24T20:11:10","modified_gmt":"2008-09-25T00:11:10","slug":"useful-resources-for-teaching-essays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/2008\/09\/24\/useful-resources-for-teaching-essays\/","title":{"rendered":"Useful Resources for Teaching Essays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve come across several new-to-me resources for teaching essays.\u00a0 Despite the fact that these sites are variously geared towards &#8220;creative nonfiction&#8221; or &#8220;literary nonfiction,&#8221; these resources should be of general use for any writing-related course, particularly considering the malleability of those genre labels.<\/p>\n<p>The first, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.creativenonfiction.org\/brevity\/index.htm\"><em>Brevity<\/em><\/a>, is an online magazine devoted to &#8220;the Art and Craft of Creative Nonfiction.&#8221;\u00a0 The magazine contains lots of interesting essays, but the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.creativenonfiction.org\/brevity\/craft.htm\">craft essays<\/a> might be of particular interest for teaching.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Brevity<\/em> site also links to a blog called <em><a href=\"http:\/\/teach-essay.blogspot.com\/\">You Gotta Teach This Essay<\/a><\/em>, which is a forum where teachers &#8220;share information on those essays that [they have found] particularly useful in teaching the art and craft of literary nonfiction.&#8221;\u00a0 The entries generally contain synopses of the essays, suggestions for pedagogical approaches, and links to the texts (when possible) or other information on locating the texts.<\/p>\n<p>From <em>You Gotta Teach This Essay<\/em>, I ended up browsing <a href=\"http:\/\/essays.quotidiana.org\/\"><em>Quotidiana<\/em><\/a>, a repository of 340 public-domain essays.\u00a0 Aside from general interest humanities applications, this site might have particular relevance for the CORE course, for History courses, for Women&#8217;s Studies (especially given the separate drop-down menu highlighting the women essayists included in the archive), or possibly for Political Science settings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve come across several new-to-me resources for teaching essays.\u00a0 Despite the fact that these sites are variously geared towards &#8220;creative nonfiction&#8221; or &#8220;literary nonfiction,&#8221; these resources should be of general use for any writing-related course, particularly considering the malleability of those genre labels.
