Or uncovered it: that may be closer to its meaning.<\/p>\n<p>As someone who follows space-related news regularly, if not obsessively, I came across &#8220;trove&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacedaily.com\/reports\/New_Findings_from_Ryugu_Samples_Reveal_Cometary_Organic_Matter_999.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in this story<\/a> about the comet Ryugu. The example from the piece shows common usage: &#8220;These samples are proving to be a veritable trove of information, not just about Ryugu but about broader solar system processes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I figured there would be a link to the French verb <em>trouver<\/em> meaning &#8220;to find,&#8221; since one thinks of treasure-hunters finding a trove of ancient gold or artifacts. The older use of our word got paired always with &#8220;treasure,&#8221; predating the solitary use of &#8220;trove&#8221; by several centuries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oed.com\/dictionary\/trove_n?tab=meaning_and_use#17349147\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The OED entry<\/a> on this week&#8217;s word does not trace the link to <em>trouver<\/em>, but a page at <a href=\"https:\/\/linguistics.stackexchange.com\/questions\/26051\/how-do-we-get-from-greek-%CF%84%CF%81%CF%8C%CF%80%CE%BF%CF%82-to-french-trouver#:~:text=The%20French%20verb%20trouver%20(to,style%2C%20or%20figure%20of%20speech.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Linguistics stack-exchange<\/a> does, going back even further, &#8220;The French verb. . . can trace its ancestry back to the Greek word \u03c4\u03c1\u03cc\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2, which means a turn, manner, style, or figure of speech.&#8221; So we turn things up in a trove.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/files\/2024\/02\/Trove-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2122\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/files\/2024\/02\/Trove-1-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Comet Ryugu\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/files\/2024\/02\/Trove-1-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/files\/2024\/02\/Trove-1-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/files\/2024\/02\/Trove-1.jpeg 554w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Our little comet doesn&#8217;t look like it would turn up much, does it? We are not looking at solid gold. Ryugu&#8217;s real trove, however, is knowledge: we may have found a means by which early life emerged on our planet, through cometary bombardment with materials essential to, well, creating us and all life around us.
