{"id":1320,"date":"2020-09-11T16:11:42","date_gmt":"2020-09-11T20:11:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/?p=1320"},"modified":"2020-09-11T18:52:27","modified_gmt":"2020-09-11T22:52:27","slug":"words-of-the-week-de-facto-de-jure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/2020\/09\/11\/words-of-the-week-de-facto-de-jure\/","title":{"rendered":"Words of the Week! de facto &#038; de jure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/files\/2020\/09\/de-jure-de-facto-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1322\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/files\/2020\/09\/de-jure-de-facto-1-300x192.png\" alt=\"Island of Cyprus\" width=\"516\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/files\/2020\/09\/de-jure-de-facto-1-300x192.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/files\/2020\/09\/de-jure-de-facto-1-768x492.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/writing\/files\/2020\/09\/de-jure-de-facto-1.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 516px) 100vw, 516px\" \/><\/a>Recently, I ran across this usage from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2018\/03\/the-unfulfilled-promise-of-fair-housing\/557009\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 2018 article<\/a> in <em>The Atlantic<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><em>And like de jure segregation\u2014when the government legally engineered ghettos into existence\u2014de facto segregation continues to exacerbate wealth and racial inequality today.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I often use <em>de facto<\/em>, luckily in its correct sense <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oed.com\/view\/Entry\/47599?redirectedFrom=de+jure&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as stated in the OED<\/a>, &#8220;in fact, in reality, in actual existence, force, or possession, as a matter of fact.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a clear distinction in all of the terms referenced by the OED using the Latin preposition\u00a0<em>de.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For\u00a0<em>de jure,\u00a0<\/em>it is a case of something being &#8220;according to law.&#8221; My example will get this post banned in China, but the Chinese occupation of Tibet constitutes a\u00a0<em>de facto,\u00a0<\/em>but not a\u00a0<em>de jure<\/em>, annexation of another nation.\u00a0 The same applies in Cyprus, where in 2005 I crossed a <em>de facto<\/em> border between north and south, seeing the UN blue helmets try to maintain a ceasefire between the Turkish and Greek populations. Closer to home, many executive orders by our Presidents constitute similar <em>de facto<\/em>, but not <em>de jure<\/em>, changes to how our government functions.<\/p>\n<p>Look at the news: which recent events and social changes are likely to become <em>de facto,\u00a0<\/em>but not <em>de jure<\/em>, parts of our daily lives in the near future?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you have some words or metaphors that puzzle you?\u00a0E-mail jessid-at-richmond-dot-edu with your nominees.
