Her name is Mei-Chih Chang, but we call her Popo (maternal grandmother in <\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\" style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">Mandarin). My mother laid down the law: Popo could not walk to the Chinese grocery store, go to her church, or interact with anyone outside our family. Popo agreed to her terms.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid6\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">Later that same day, my mother ran into Popo at the Chinese grocery store.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid7\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid8\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">Popo defended herself: she had to use the bathroom. My mother wasn\u2019t convinced. Back home, my mother, now upset, re-explained the dangers of coronavirus situation and got her siblings to call Popo and yell at her some more. Thankfully, Popo has since learned her lesson.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid9\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid10\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">While my mother<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">, <\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">Yen-Pei<\/span> <span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">Christy Chang<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">, <\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">shares half of her DNA with Popo, their differences outnumber their similarities.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid11\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid12\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">Popo grew up in Taiwan. Her formal education ended after elementary school<\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">\u00a0when she left to<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\"> take care of her three sisters after their mother died. She was a housewife before she moved<\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">, at 39,<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\"> to Bluefield, West Virginia<\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">, where she<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\"> worked in an electronics factory and as a house cleaner. My mother, who was 12 years old when she immigrated to the US<\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\"> with Popo<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">, <\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">has a <\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">Ph.D.<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\"> in Human Genetics<\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">, <\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">works as <\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">a <\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">part-time<\/span> <span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">professor at the University of Maryland Medical School and <\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">is <\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">a clinical psychology student.<\/span> <span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">Sometimes, Popo hugs my mother, looks up at her in awe, and asks, \u201chow did you come from me?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid13\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid14\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">Popo is now 77 years old. Five years ago, <\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">she<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\"> moved into a nearby condo so my mother could take her to lung specialists<\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">. She<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\"> suffers from bronchiectasis, a respiratory disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-node-type=\"line\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid16\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">\u201cAbout a third of her lungs are scarred and no longer elastic<\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">,<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">\u201d <\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">m<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">y mother explained. \u201cSo it is harder for her to fight off infection<\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\"> and<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\"> expel air, and she has reduced lung capacity.\u201d Popo has short periods of heavy coughing multiple times a day. Laughing, strong smells, smoke, and getting surprised can all set them off. Deep breaths trigger coughing as well, so her breathing is shallow and sound like frequent sniffing.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid17\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid18\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">When my mother heard the coronavirus was in the U.S., <\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">she was concerned about<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\"> Popo.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid19\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid20\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">If she were infected,<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\"> \u201c<\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">t<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">here is almost no chance she would survive<\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">,&#8221; my mom said<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">. <\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">&#8220;<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">But for her to maintain a certain standard of living, she needs to take long walks. If she is walking, she will naturally exercise her lungs. So if we isolate her, it would comprise her health. If she walks and doesn\u2019t interact with anyone outside our family, it\u2019s the safest for her.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid21\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid22\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\">\n<div id=\"attachment_3951\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/walkingrichmond\/files\/2020\/04\/Popo-Hands-Square_FINAL.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3951\" class=\"wp-image-3951\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/walkingrichmond\/files\/2020\/04\/Popo-Hands-Square_FINAL.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"372\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3951\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Popo rests her hand on my mother&#8217;s knee.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">Three of my mother\u2019s co-workers have lost someone to coronavirus. She knows that Popo may be the one she loses to COVID-19.<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-node-type=\"line\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid24\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">\u201cI am not so upset because I know eventually, something will compromise her health. Because she actively prays to God to go back to her Heavenly Father, I know that she won\u2019t be resentful or disappointed that her life is ending. That gives me some peace of mind. Popo wants autonomy, it\u2019s not stubbornness or a desire to make me more worried. I have to respect that in her. But it\u2019s a difficult adjustment for anybody starting to take over as caretaker instead of being the child.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid25\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid26\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">With my mother translating<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">, I asked Popo if she is scared of contracting COVID-19.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid27\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid28\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">\u201cI am not thinking about myself at all. Every time I go to sleep, I think, \u2018this may be the last time I open my eyes. That\u2019s fine. I am ready at any time to go.\u2019 Every morning I wake up I think, \u2018Oh, God wants me to live an<\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">o<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">ther day<\/span><span class=\"author-260798053 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">.<\/span><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">\u2019 I thank him and go with my day. But if I didn\u2019t get that day, I would be happy.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid29\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid30\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-3593385384 font-size-medium\">\u00a0\u201cI am the Popo, she is the Mama (referring to my mother), and you are the granddaughter.
