\u201cGive me Liberty or Give me Death!\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

T<\/span>h<\/span>os<\/span>e iconic words<\/span>, proclaimed<\/span> by <\/span>Virginia colonist <\/span>Patrick<\/span> Henry<\/span>,<\/span> ring<\/span> true <\/span>today in Church Hill <\/span>just<\/span> as they did in 1775<\/span>, when Henry <\/span>himself <\/span>addressed a crowd<\/span> that consisted of\u00a0<\/span> George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and other important figures of the American Revolution<\/span> , with that infamous phrase right under the roof of St. John’s.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

A year later, many of them would draft and sign the Declaration of Independence. And although Henry, a prominent Virginia planter and public servant, wasn’t there, the defiant speech he’d delivered in Church Hill still echoed in their shared memory, and helped to ignite a revolution.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a way, t<\/span>he <\/span>divided nation that arose from that struggle can still be seen<\/span> in Church Hill today, with <\/span>the poverty of North Churchill so close to the rampant <\/span>gentrification <\/span>transforming the leafy streets around St. Johns. The church<\/span> is a revered historic <\/span>landmark<\/span> that straddles<\/span> Richmond’s<\/span> socioeconomic and racial divide<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span> Half of Church Hill is living in extraordinarily extravagant circumstances<\/span>, while the other half struggles <\/span>below the poverty line.<\/span><\/p>\n

As of 2015, <\/span>51,303<\/span> of the <\/span>203,150 <\/span>population of Richmond are living below the poverty line, 64% of this poverty can be linked back to the African American community, with only 22% accounting for whites in the city. Poverty and race have long been intertwined within this great city, something which resonates greatly throughout Church Hill and it’s northern counterpart.<\/span><\/p>\n

St. Johns Church was founded in 1741, and it’s easy there to be transported back in time,<\/span> what with the aged architecture, weathered head stones and staff adorned in civil war robes,<\/span> to the fraught and thrilling years in America when all things seemed possible, including liberty and justice for all.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As I listened to Ray, a local tour guide, talk about the ideals that forged a nation, <\/span>I couldn’t help but survey the crowd that was gathering for <\/span>a <\/span>tour of the grounds. <\/span>Blacks<\/span>, <\/span>whites<\/span>, Asians and Latino’s, <\/span>together<\/span> milled about<\/span> the headstones<\/span> in the church cemetery<\/span>, <\/span>laughing and socializing before stepping <\/span>inside for a sermon or <\/span>strolling on to <\/span>enjoy the lovely weather.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

Both communities<\/span> living<\/span> in Church Hill w<\/span>ere<\/span> represented at <\/span>the church<\/span> that day<\/span>. T<\/span>hey <\/span>were <\/span>equal <\/span>on the hallowed grounds of St. Johns Church<\/span>,<\/span> I thought,<\/span> but <\/span>what awaited them back home? Two hundred and forty two years after Patrick Henry’s fiery speech, is there one America, or two? Will the two Church Hills ever be United?\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

I<\/span>t was revealed from analysed census data, that the median income for Church Hill is $75,833, while North Church Hill stands at $27,100 per annum. With approximately 82.4% of North Church Hill’s population consisting of African Americans, it’s glaringly clear that the wealth in the East End is not evenly distributed.<\/span><\/div>\n

“Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?”, these words once bellowed throughout the halls of St. Johns, ring true today as they did back then. While slavery may be no more, there are those living in Church Hill who are enslaved by the dollar signs, each and every day. Is the gentrification of the East End so sweet as to be purchased at the price of those below the poverty line?\u00a0 Say yes to progress, but progress for whom is the question we must ask of ourselves.<\/div>\n
